Self-Medication

Medication usually involves drugs that are available through prescriptions and the main function of these drugs are to aid in treatment of diseases, illnesses, or disorders. Self - medication is normally associated with individuals who would use drugs, substances, over-the-counter drugs or alcohol inappropriately to ease or relieve themselves from emotional problems or to manage their other symptoms without professional guidance or support. The growing prevalence of self medication through drugs and substances could potentially be arising as a way of coping with emotions, self esteem, environmental triggers and personal relationships which trigger painful emotions.

Since the drugs are strengthening the desired outcomes to compensate for the negative internal turmoil, it motivates the individual to do more of what settles them down. This drive then develops from an impulse to a compulsion. Negative emotional states trigger the reinstatement and a possible condition of withdrawal when the drugs are not in the system, starting the cycle of addiction. Research has also shown a high correlation between emotional distress and drug consumption. Individuals who tend to struggle with depression, chronic stress, anxiety and PTSD, along with those in aversive environmental conditions tend to self medicate in order to feel better.

The possible reason as to why individuals may choose to continue to self medicate could be because of the reward system that is related to the drugs and the ‘feel-good’ feelings that comes out of the consumption of the drugs. This would eventually lead to the onset of addictive behaviors which relates to the ‘pleasure’ produced by these substances which then in turn reinforces the behavior of taking the substances. Thus the ‘pleasure’ becomes what drives the individuals to continue to take the substances. Now, the choice of drug consumed depends on the drug’s ability to relieve the individual from a disorder or persistent negative emotional states.

This is becoming a growing concern because of how self medication is leading to a cycle of addiction, and how it's gradually becoming a mental health crisis. The inability of individuals to self-regulate their emotions and stresses, and learn healthy coping mechanisms, is causing them to resort to substances and drugs, and resort to maladaptive coping strategies to help them cope with the issues and problems of life. Self medication often masks underlying issues, with the main concern being substance abuse, dependency or a possible worsening of current mental health problems.

Intervention and Solutions

There are various interventions and solutions that can be taken towards curbing self-medication. First is, creating awareness of risks with regards to self-medication and the impact it could have not only on the mental health but also the physical health of the individual. Problems could be arising when the individual is unaware of the health conditions that may arise from medicating oneself rather than getting professional advice to help target the problem effectively.

Next, would ideally be to learn how to develop healthy coping strategies to problems that cause an individual to resort to substances.

Last but not the least, to seek professional help. Professional help will guide the individual into dealing with the problems effectively rather than resorting to maladaptive coping mechanisms that would in turn cause more harm than good.

Coping Strategies:

Identifying the thought which triggers the pattern of self medication and behavior is crucial in order to start developing healthy coping mechanisms. This helps in breaking the cycle of negative thinking and anxious thoughts. Mindfulness practices enhance awareness of the triggers along with the root causes of the behavior, and enable us to develop better and healthier coping mechanisms. Mindfulness helps reduce rumination and promote emotional regulation and mental clarity.

Scriptures remind us that we are never alone, and for us not to be anxious in anything, but through prayer and petition, to surrender them to God, and to let God deal with our problems (Phillipians 4:6-7). We can find peace and comfort in His presence, especially while dealing with overwhelming emotions. 1 Peter 5:7 says "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you". Letting go of the weight of anxiety and trusting in God can bring relief. Surrendering control to the one who can actually bring about change, will bring change into our lives.

Developing healthy coping mechanisms like exercise, journaling, and understanding how to regulate emotions is equally important. Journaling helps in processing emotions and provides a space for emotional release. Exercise and physical activity releases endorphins which enhances the mood naturally. Regular physical activities have been shown to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Healthy lifestyle choices which includes maintaining a balanced diet, good sleep, among other things, helps us to be healthy. A balanced diet and adequate sleep are essential for maintaining mental health. In case if there is a lack of these things, it may worsen anxiety and depression.

A supportive community of believers can offer emotional support, prayer, and encouragement. The Bible emphasizes the importance of community, especially during times of struggle. It also mentions in Hebrews 10:24-25 that building relationships with fellow believers and engaging in church communities provide support and encouragement. Encouraging participation in support groups fosters connection and reduces feelings of isolation, which can contribute to self-medication. Engaging in enjoyable activities with others or with oneself can also combat feelings of anxiety and depression and promote wellbeing.

In conclusion, while self-medication may seem like a quick fix for managing emotional or psychological distress, it often comes with significant risks. The tendency to rely on substances or unregulated practices can mask underlying issues, making it harder to address the root causes of mental health challenges. Understanding the various factors that drive self-medication is crucial for developing healthier coping mechanisms. By seeking professional support, building emotional resilience, and exploring therapeutic alternatives, individuals can take more informed and safer steps toward healing. Ultimately, self-care involves not just managing symptoms, but nurturing a deeper understanding of one's mental well-being.
